Every serious water upgrade starts the same way: measure first. You cannot tune water you haven’t tested, and guessing leads people to spend money solving the wrong problem — softening water that was fine, or ignoring hardness that’s quietly flattening every cup.   • What it does NOT tell you: the breakdown. A TDS meter can’t separate good hardness (calcium/magnesium) from bad alkalinity or sodium. Two waters can read the same TDS and brew completely differently.

Verdict: Worth owning — it’s cheap, instant, and great for spot-checking and comparing waters. But it’s a thermometer, not a diagnosis. Don’t make big decisions on TDS alone.

Level 2: Test strips / hardness + alkalinity kits (~$10–25)

The next step up: drop-test kits or strips that measure hardness and alkalinity (KH) separately. Aquarium hobbyists use these constantly, and they’re genuinely useful for coffee because they split apart the two things TDS can’t.

  • Hardness tells you your “good mineral” content.
  • Alkalinity tells you how much your water is buffering (flattening) acidity.

  • Alkalinity and pH
  • Chlorine / chloramine
  • Sodium
