“Should I be more worried about well water or city water?” It’s one of the most common water questions, and the honest answer isn’t the tribal one people expect. Neither is automatically safer. They carry different risks — and both need testing. Let’s break down what each is actually prone to, using real numbers.
First, the scale: about 9 out of 10 Americans get water from a regulated public system (CDC), while more than 43 million people — over 23 million households — rely on private wells (EPA). Those are two very different situations with two very different risk profiles.
City water: regulated, but not risk-free
The big advantage of municipal water is oversight. It’s treated, monitored, and regulated under the Safe Drinking Water Act. Your utility tests constantly and sends you an annual report. That’s real protection you shouldn’t dismiss.
But regulation has limits:
- “Legal” isn’t “safe.” For lead, arsenic, and the PFAS chemicals PFOA/PFOS, the EPA’s own health goal is zero — but the enforceable legal limits are higher, set by what’s feasible, not what’s healthy. - Lead is a last-mile problem. The EPA estimates up to 9 million homes still have lead service lines. Lead usually enters after the treatment plant — from your service line or home plumbing — so the city’s water can test clean while yours doesn’t.
- Disinfection byproducts. The chlorine that keeps city water safe from pathogens creates byproducts (trihalomethanes) with their own long-term health limits.
- PFAS. The first nationwide USGS study estimated ~45% of US tap water contains PFAS “forever chemicals.”
So city water trades one risk (pathogens, handled well by treatment) for a set of low-level chemical exposures, plus whatever your own pipes add on the way to your glass.
Well water: yours alone — and nobody’s checking
Here’s the fact that surprises most well owners: “The quality and safety of drinking water from private wells are not regulated by the Federal Government under the Safe Drinking Water Act, nor by most state governments” (EPA). As the CDC puts it plainly: private well water “is not regulated, treated, or monitored by officials.”
That means you are the water utility. No one is testing your well but you. And wells are prone to a different, often more serious set of contaminants:
- Bacteria — coliform and E. coli from surface runoff, septic systems, or animal waste. The single most important thing to test a well for, because it’s an immediate health risk.
- Nitrates — from agricultural fertilizer and septic runoff. Dangerous especially for infants (“blue baby syndrome”). Common in farm-country wells.

- Iron, manganese, hardness — usually not dangerous, but they wreck taste, stain fixtures, and foul equipment.
- Radon, uranium, and other geology-specific contaminants depending on your local rock.
And critically: PFAS aren’t just a city problem. The USGS found PFAS at similar rates in private wells and public supplies. Being on a well doesn’t make you immune.
The verdict: it’s not which — it’s whether you’ve tested

City water is “safer by default” in the sense that someone’s watching — but it’s not clean, and your pipes are your problem. Well water has no default safety net at all — but a well that’s tested and properly treated can be excellent, often better than city water because you control it end to end.
The real dividing line isn’t well vs. city. It’s tested vs. untested. An untested well and an unquestioned city tap are both gambles. A tested, understood water supply — either kind — is one you can actually trust and fix.
